Residency at Valentines Mansions, Ilford, Essex
A playful response to the concealed walled boundary (known as a ha-ha) between the grounds of Valentines Mansions and the neighbouring parkland. Created with hand-shears, the work embodies the tradition of mowing, trimming and rolling to create a manicured English garden. The work plays on the notion of the signified/signifier (Saussure), as the ha-ha does not represent the object it labels (the lawn), and thus draws attention to the arbitrary juxtaposition of words and images.
